What is Mean Length of Utterance (MLU)?

MLU is a measure of linguistic productivity in children. It's calculated by dividing the total number of morphemes by the total number of utterances in a speech sample. MLU is widely used to assess language development and identify potential delays.

Analysis Methods

  • Morphemes (MLU-m): Standard method counting grammatical morphemes
  • Words (MLU-w): Alternative method counting words only
  • Brown's Rules: Classic rules for morpheme counting
  • Advanced: Detailed morphological analysis

Expected MLU by Age

  • 18-24 months: 1.0-2.0 morphemes
  • 2-3 years: 2.0-3.0 morphemes
  • 3-4 years: 3.0-4.0 morphemes
  • 4-5 years: 4.0-5.0 morphemes
  • 5+ years: 5.0+ morphemes
