MLU Calculator Guide
What is Mean Length of Utterance (MLU)?
MLU is a measure of linguistic productivity in children. It's calculated by dividing the total number of morphemes by the total number of utterances in a speech sample. MLU is widely used to assess language development and identify potential delays.
Analysis Methods
- Morphemes (MLU-m): Standard method counting grammatical morphemes
- Words (MLU-w): Alternative method counting words only
- Brown's Rules: Classic rules for morpheme counting
- Advanced: Detailed morphological analysis
Expected MLU by Age
- 18-24 months: 1.0-2.0 morphemes
- 2-3 years: 2.0-3.0 morphemes
- 3-4 years: 3.0-4.0 morphemes
- 4-5 years: 4.0-5.0 morphemes
- 5+ years: 5.0+ morphemes
